More options to format and customize table of contents in Google Docs! These enhancements help you to personalize the content of your document better. 


Now you are able to:

1. choose between three default styles: 

  • plain text
  • dotted
  • links

2. change tab leader styles 

3 change heading levels. 




How to insert a table of contents: 

  1. Check that you have titles/headings in your document (at the top, click 'normal text' > click a heading style, and the heading will be added to the outline). 

  2. On the top menu, click Insert > Table of contents > choose the suitable option

  3. Right-click the newly created table of contents and select “Table of contents options” to open the sidebar. 

  4. Customize your document’s table of contents using the sidebar on the right side. 



Availability: Available to all Google Workspace customers


Timeline: 

Rapid Release domains: Gradual rollout (up to 15 days for feature visibility) starting on March 20, 2023 

Scheduled Release domains: Full rollout (1–3 days for feature visibility) starting April 3, 2023
